hikikomori syndrome
hikikomori

Hikikomori (literally "pulling away, being confined," i.e., "acute social withdrawal") is a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive adolescents and young adults who have chosen to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement due to various personal and social factors in their lives. The term "Hikikomori" refers to both the sociological phenomenon in general as well as to individuals belonging to this societal group. The term was originated in Japan but is in no way exclusive to the culture. For example, some youths in the USA have dubbed themselves "American Hikikomori".

Hikikomori was first recognized in the early 1990s. One million Japanese, or almost 1 percent of the population, are estimated to suffer from Hikikomori, defined as a withdrawal from friends and family for months or even years. Some 40 percent of Hikikomori are below the age of 21.

Western psychologists compare Hikikomori with social anxiety and agoraphobia. The affliction has also been likened to Asperger's syndrome, a mild variant of autism.

Yuichi Hattori, M.A., a psychologist currently treating 18 patients with the disorder, believes that Hikikomori is caused by emotionally neglectful parenting. Hattori argues that none of his patients had been sexually or physically abused, yet they all show signs of posttraumatic stress disorder.

"Hikikomori looks more to me like an extreme case of social anxiety," says David Kupfer, Ph.D., a psychologist with a private practice in Virginia. Emotionally unresponsive parents are only one of the factors involved in the development of this disorder, says Kupfer.

The Japanese Ministry of Health defines Hikikomori as individuals who refuse to leave their parents' house, and isolate themselves away from society and family in a single room for a period exceeding six months. While the distinctiveness of the phenomenon varies depending on the individual, some youths remain in isolation for years, or in rare cases, decades. Often Hikikomori start out as school refusals.

Treatment

Hikikomori is basically a form of social anxiety and treatment is essentially the same. "Anti-Anxiety" and "Supreme Self Confidence" work very well for these disorders. "Stop Procrastinating Now" can also be beneficial.

Subliminal Therapy is a psychological process in which critical thinking faculties of the mind are bypassed and a type of selective thinking and perception is established in the patient. We recommend our subliminal hypnosis sessions be used when you are falling asleep or meditating. It is in these times when you will receive maximum benefits as the subconscious mind is open to suggestion.

Testimonials
I cannot thank you enough for your CD “Self Confidence Now”. Since I started listening to it, only about 3 weeks ago, I sleep better, feel more confident, don't get so stressed out during the day and have become far less emotional. I have yet to make it all the way to the end, usually I’m sleeping by 15 minutes in. I now have five Subliminal Therapy CDs I can always count on. These CDs have had a bigger impact on my life than just about anything, including medication and therapy.

I have never experienced such a powerful cd like “Anti-Anxiety”. It is absolutely amazing. I am recovering from an eating disorder, and it has helped me so much to let go of fears, and so much stress. Whenever I listen to it, I feel energized, and more in touch with my inner self. The best gift is that the more I listen to it, the more I live my life in peace, and following my intuition. Thank you, this is a true gift!!!

I've been listening to “Supreme Self Confidence” a few times per week for 3 years. I was resistant at first, but a great friend urged me to listen to it. After a week, I began to experience many benefits. I've used “Deep Sleep” to recover from jet lag when I've traveled overseas in addition to keeping myself energized and balanced. I've recommended you to my clients as a way to get more in touch with their feelings and intuition. Now, it is a regular part of my self-care routine.
